Missionaries

These “image essays” gather together striking images on the same theme from across the books in the exhibit.

Missionaries were typically presented to the American reading public as courageous and tenacious pioneers far afield from home, confronted by the unfamiliarity and the unsafety thought to prevail in the world beyond the United States and Europe. As with other official and unofficial emissaries of the United States, missionaries were seen primarily as delivering American modernity to indigenous cultures around the world, much more than interacting with them.
