Navy Stations

These “image essays” gather together striking images on the same theme from across the books in the exhibit.

Starting in 1820, the United States attained the capacity to station navy agents and naval storekeepers in a growing array of strategic port cities around the world. There, American navy squadrons cruising the oceans could find ready supplies for their ships as they projected American military power whenever and wherever deemed necessary. In the 1820s and 1830s this meant the Atlantic world; in the 1840s and 1850s it encompassed the Pacific world as well.
