These “image essays” gather together striking images on the same theme from across the books in the exhibit.
American geography books peddled theories of social development thought to unfold in chronological stages from the savage to the civilized. Conceding that Britain now represented the height of civilization and acme of modernity, Americans sought to elevate their own global stature by trumpeting the rapidity of their social development, often with Native Americans positioned as unharmed witnesses to the arrival of civilization and modernity separate from them.
